Portable Sinks...how do they work?
A quick look at how our hand washing systems work and how to maintain them.
Our range of portable and self-contained sinks, basins and hand washing stations are designed to provide hand washing facility's right at the point of need. They do not require access to mains plumbing, rather, they provide access to hand washing facilities in circumstances where the installation of plumbing may be impractical, unfeasible or simply impossible. Why? Because hand washing saves lives.
So what is a portable sink?
Our range of portable and permanent sinks all have one thing in common - they are self-contained. Self-contained means they are able to function completely independent of plumbing, that is, they have their own fresh and waste water tanks. They can be setup and operated in almost any location that has access to power and some even work without. We supply to a broad range of industries for various contexts of use.
Where does the water come from?
Our units draw their water from internally located, sealed fresh water tanks using our specially designed system. These tanks can be easily removed and filled easily from a normal tap with normal tap water. All of our units (except the Handeman market sink) feature this system, where a small, smart power unit which contains a miniature pump and instant hot water heater operate in tandem to deliver 40-45 degrees celsius warm water hand wash (Smart Sink dish/utensil wash sink delivers 75 degree water). The system heats the water only on demand which is not only more hygienic than traditional storage heaters, but more economic as well. Activation is via a hands free infrared sensor stop re-contamination of your hands and prevent the spread of infection. The waste water passes through the drain and is hygienically and separately stored in a waste water tank inside the unit - ready to be emptied once a day or once a week into any appropriate waste location (nearby drain, toilet, etc).
How do you maintain a portable sink?
Self-contained systems, like normal sinks, require a small level of maintenance. Its as simple as adding one extra task to the daily or weekly cleaning schedule. Daily cleaning - empty and refill the fresh and waste water tanks (as required) and wipe all surfaces with a cloth and mild soap. Disinfection - minimum once per week to maintain a potable water supply. Each unit comes with a full instruction manual, weekly cleaning checklist and two packets of disinfection tablets that can be dissolved in the fresh water tank and run through the unit for 5 minutes as per the in-built cycle. The whole process takes approximately 10 minutes only.
Where are they used?
Most people would think food pop-ups and markets - and you wouldn't be wrong! Markets, festivals and street food events have always been tricky for plumbing and most operators in the past have been left to formulate a hand washing facility using some imagination sprinkled with a little resourcefulness. Thanks to our range of portable units such as the Handeman and Super Stallette - most markets and events now have access to fit for purpose, specially designed hand washing basins which keep practicality, mobility and versatility in mind to suit almost any temporary operation, big or small.
Another of our biggest markets is Health and Medical - in particular Hospitals and Aged Care Facilities for planned maintenance, plumbing failure, infection control outbreaks and hand wash training. In recent years though we've seen very large demand from small businesses in a range of different industries, including beauty therapy and body art, health and wellness, and a huge push from more permanent/semi-permanent food operations such as pop-up kiosks, cafes and restaurants. Leased building, heritage listed sites, 10 metre wide concrete slabs and a laundry list of building restrictions all contribute to making the installation of mains plumbing a business owners worst nightmare. Our Medi Sink hand washing unit is by far our most popular unit amongst beauty and health settings as it effectively provides a fit for purpose hand washing basin to literally any location needed, without the restraints of mains plumbing or waste outlets. It's plug and play functionality allows hand washing to be setup right where its needed. The Commercial Sink has been hugely popular with front of house service area's such as those Gelato bars or Bain Marie's that might infrequently 'pop-up' for weeks at a time throughout the year. Providing flexibility to small business's who are unable to have plumbing installed but require important hand washing facilities in the immediate area.
